We will be helping to make our communities beautiful places to live by cleaning up an impacted stretch of the Truckee River in Reno and beautifying City View Park in North Las Vegas. We will gather at 8:00am and start the day off by participating in the simultaneous swearing in of AmeriCorps members across the country at 8:30am. At 8:45am the service projects will begin and will be followed by a Celebration of Service with speakers, awards, and lunch.
To Bring: Work Gloves, Photos of your AmeriCorps, Military, or volunteer service (we will be collecting these for a service collage so only bring photos you do not expect to be returned).
This event is organized in partnership with the Office of the Governor, Nevada Volunteers, the City of Reno, The City of North Las Vegas, and Green Zone Give Back volunteers. Since 2002, September 11 has been designated as a day of charitable service and observance to provide a positive way to forever remember and pay tribute to the 9/11 victims, honor those that rose in service in response to the attacks, and remind people of the importance of working more closely together to improve our world. September 12, 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the swearing-in of the first ever class of AmeriCorps members. The alignment of these events is an opportunity to honor service of all kinds and to promote service as a solution to Nevada’s needs. Local partners include United Way of Southern Nevada, Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, the Children’s Cabinet, Urban Roots, Nevada Outdoor School, the Great Basin Institute, Youth Build Las Vegas, Corporation for National and Community Service’s Nevada State Office, and the Nevada National Guard.
